Measurement

Part of UGC marketplaces measurement: keeping six evidence classes apart

UGC marketplaces attribution methods for one asset

UGC marketplaces attribution methods for one asset: compare creator codes, tagged links and platform reports, then state what a holdout can and cannot prove.

What to take away

  • A single England UGC asset can be measured with platform attribution (Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager), modelled multi-touch attribution (Triple Whale, Northbeam), or a counterfactual design (Meta Conversion Lift, geo holdout, CausalImpact, Robyn).
  • Platform reports prove credit only. Modelled attribution proves association under stated assumptions. A lift test or holdout can estimate an incremental effect for the studied population.
  • One asset rarely supports a credible counterfactual, so label the result observed, attributed or associated.
  • If a permitted window, matching or model change reverses continue, revise or stop, hold the decision and ask for more evidence.
  • Rights, consent and ad-recognition gates come first. A positive attributed number cannot cure a failed gate.

What each method can actually prove

This guide sets out UGC marketplaces attribution methods for one creator asset: attribution places credit, while causal evaluation asks what changed because the asset existed. Both may use the same buyer outcome, yet they answer different questions.

The Magenta Book and its QPIE supplement keep process, impact and value-for-money questions apart, and note that monitoring change does not establish cause.

Keep baseline, attribution and causal evidence in separate columns, as our ROI separation guide sets out, because that split fixes what each method may claim.

For sourcing, Billo and Insense are examples of UGC creator services; TikTok Creator Marketplace and YouTube BrandConnect are platform-native creator routes. UGC may run on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or Snapchat, so record the platform, creator and asset identifiers.

Use creator or promo codes, affiliate links and UTM-tagged URLs to trace responses. Record whether the content was boosted through TikTok Spark Ads or used as Instagram branded content; these identifiers and platform reports can support attribution, but do not by themselves establish incremental effect.

Run the six admission tests before paying for any dashboard. Treat a third-party price for Northbeam or INCRMNTAL as unverified, and ask the vendor for a written band in pounds with a date.

  1. Identity:Can the tool keep the creator, asset and campaign identifiers consistent across the marketplace, platform and buyer records?
  2. Capture:Can it ingest the relevant platform and order data, including creator codes, affiliate links and UTM tags?
  3. UGC coverage:Can it distinguish organic creator posts from paid amplification, and retain the relevant platform and ad identifiers?
  4. Reconciliation:Does it show attribution windows, duplicate events, unmatched records and the rules used to assign credit?
  5. Rights and access:Can you use the data lawfully, and do the permissions and licence cover the proposed measurement and paid use?
  6. Cost and exit:Will the vendor give a dated GBP cost band, explain what is included, and let you export the underlying data?

Example: reconciling one asset under two methods

F-UGC-01 is a fictional 20-second Instagram creator asset for one English brand unit, one release and one outcome population. The creator post is labelled as branded content; the brand records its Meta ad ID, creator code, affiliate link and UTM-tagged URL. Every figure here is illustrative.

Method A uses Meta Ads Manager on its default 7-day click and 1-day view windows. The platform credits 9,600 purchases. Google Ads last-click credits 4,100 of the same events, and the buyer order system matches 6,200. The code and tagged-link records help reconcile creator responses, but do not prove incremental effect. Refunds remove 1,900 and 2,400 events appear in both platforms.

Count platform credit once. Exclude cancelled and unmatched events. Report 6,200 as attributed credit, not as effect, and keep the GA4 export beside it instead of adding the totals.

Method B uses a geo holdout with two test regions and two matched controls declared in advance. It estimates a 3.1 per cent lift in the buyer outcome. The interval includes zero, so the estimate stays directional.

The decision is revise and re-measure. Because the interval includes zero, it does not establish positive lift; compare the estimate and interval with the pre-set decision threshold. An unstable interval supports narrowing the claim rather than a stop verdict, and the owner records that threshold.

Can the design support causation?

Does the design define intervention, units, outcome, comparison and allocation?

Yes

label result causal and proceed

No

label observed, attributed or associated and stop

England rules that bind the measurement

The ASA advertising codes require marketing communications to be identifiable as such. The guidance on recognising ads on social media sets out the labels, and disclosure affects what the asset may be called in reporting.

Creator content holding personal data needs a lawful basis and clear consent, covered by ICO UK GDPR guidance. Measurement joins platform and buyer records, so purpose, access and retention decisions sit under this heading.

Copyright and usage rights rest on the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. A licence that excludes paid measurement use can void the result.

Our advertising rules walkthrough tests one advert for recognition, claims and rights, which is the order these gates should be checked in.

Next steps before you spend or continue

  1. Write the decision and its threshold firstcontinue, revise or stop, with a number attached.
  2. Fix asset identity, geography, period, timezone and the buyer outcome definition.
  3. Run the reconciliation contractone credit rule, overlapping and unmatched records shown, sensitivity beside the primary rule.
  4. Clear the gatesASA disclosure, ICO lawful basis, CDPA licence, accessibility and security.
  5. Record the method, any cost band and the quote date, then hand the pack to the decision owner.

Before You Act

  • Define eligible outcome in buyer system first
  • Keep platform and buyer-reconciled columns separate
  • Store commission, asset, release identifiers
  • State approach, window and model limits
  • Show unmatched and overlapping records
  • Label observed, attributed or associated
  • Get evaluator, statistician, finance, privacy approval

Common questions

Which method fits which decision?

Platform reports answer operational questions about recorded events. Modelled multi-touch answers budget allocation across channels. Only a pre-specified lift or holdout supports an incremental claim.

What should I do when two tools disagree?

Do not add them. Publish one primary rule, show overlapping and unmatched records separately, and report the sensitivity range. Hold the decision if a permitted choice flips it.

Can one asset support a causal claim?

Rarely on its own. A credible design needs defined units, a comparison, an allocation strategy and pre-specified analysis. Without those, label the result attributed.
